A wide coral reef largely surrounds Sri Lanka's coastline making it ideal for diving. An underwater journey into the aquamarine waters of the Indian Ocean rewards you with glimpses of a totally different world, full of astounding colour and life. Home to a magical variety of tropical fish and coral reefs, the calm ocean waters also lay claim to some historic wrecks that offer unusual exploration opportunities. The more laid-back activity of snorkeling is a popular past-time in many southern coastal areas. All underwater activities are conducted by well-trained and experienced UDI and PADI instructors to ensure your absolute safety and enjoyment. The best season in the south and west coasts for diving and snorkeling is generally from Nov to Apr due to effect of monsoon.
For a real wind-surfer's paradise, head down to Bentota on the south-west coast of Sri Lanka where the exhilaration of cruising across the azure water overlooking the idyllic beach won't fail to disappoint. For beginners of windsurfing, the more tranquil waters of the Bentota River or any of Sri Lanka's many tanks and lakes offer an ideal training zone before heading out to the challenge of the ocean. The best time for windsurfing on the west coast is between Nov and Apr. It's sunny and the water and wind conditions are good. After April the monsoon hits and the seas can be very rough with conditions more suitable for experienced windsurfers. The possibilities of windsurfing in Sri Lanka are not just limited to the coastline. There are many tanks and lakes in the interior that have the potential of making the sport island wide.
The island of Sri Lanka with its impressive long coast line and warm sea water is a perfect location for various aquatic activities. The best place for water sports in the island is without doubt the town of Bentota on the West Coast, which is approximately 2.5 hours south from the airport. It benefits from a large flat estuary at the mouth of the Bentota River, which ensures safe waters all year round for wakeboarding windsurfing, waterskiing, banana rides, donuts, kayaking and Jet Ski. Therefore, even during the monsoon (April-Nov) when the sea is unsafe for swimming and other activities have to cease the water sports can continue. Other activities include river cruises and from Nov-March surfing, body boarding, deep sea fishing……etc
